West Papua vs 'Easy' West Papua tour comparision

West Papua forms the western half of the vast island of New Guinea, and offers a safer and hassle free alternative to visiting PNG, especially with a large number of endemics of its own to seek out. Birding travel here has become much easier in recent years, and with masses of experience operating tours there, has become one of our most popular destinations.

We now have three different tour offerings to West Papua and this overview is to help people choose the most suitable tours for their needs;

Ultimate West Papua (28 days); as the name suggests, this is our most comprehensive tour, covering all reasonably accessible birding areas and aiming to see as many of the endemics and other specialties as possible. It includes a total of 6 nights camping and a few other nights in basic village accommodation in areas where this increases our chance of key species. There are some difficult trails but these will be manageable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness.

Birds Head and Raja Ampat (15 days); this is an abridged version of the above tour, visiting just the Arfak Mountains, Sorong and Waigeo. It covers these areas just as thorough, searching for all the usual targets in these areas, and is designed for people who because of work or other commitments can only manage a two-week visit to the area.

EASY West Papua (21 days); a much less strenuous version of our other tours, it misses or lessens the most difficult trails and has zero camping. It does not aim to see every possible endemic because some of these do require difficult walks and some more widespread birds will inevitably be missed because less time is spent in some areas. It does though cover all the main areas and will give a great selection of the species on offer including some of the most spectacular that West Papua has to offer. It is a perfect tour for people who are not physically inclined to our more comprehensive West Papua tours, or those that wish to avoid any camping.
